Childrens School: Damot, Pakistan

The Crisis.

In Damot, many primary-age children study in overcrowded, damaged classrooms or makeshift spaces that lack desks, lighting, and ventilation. Long walks to school, heat waves and seasonal floods, and inadequate water and sanitation facilities—especially private, safe latrines for girls—undermine attendance and learning.

Teacher shortages force multi-grade classes with limited materials, widening foundational gaps in reading and numeracy. Irregular power, scarce textbooks, and weak maintenance mean frequent interruptions, and without targeted support, dropout and protection risks rise for the most vulnerable learners.

The Challenge.

The school must provide safe, inclusive learning spaces with dependable WASH, stronger teaching support, and community stewardship so children can learn consistently and with dignity.

  • Safe, climate-resilient classrooms: Repair or build well-ventilated rooms with durable roofing, flood and heat protection, shaded play areas, perimeter fencing, and basic safeguarding measures for arrival and dismissal.

  • WASH and health: Install a reliable water point, gender-segregated latrines with menstrual hygiene spaces, and handwashing stations, and pair them with hygiene promotion and simple health screening days.

  • Teaching and learning quality: Recruit and mentor local teachers, train for multi-grade pedagogy and psychosocial support, supply age-appropriate textbooks and learning kits, and run remedial clubs to close learning gaps.

  • Community governance and sustainability: Establish an active school management committee with strong parent representation, create a maintenance plan with small grants, add solar lighting for reliability, and keep open feedback channels for accountability.

Project Summary

The children of Damot face significant challenges due to the lack of educational opportunities, including limited school access, insufficient classroom spaces and a lack of learning materials. Children from low and middle-income families often cannot attend good quality schools in Gilgit city, about 54 kilometres away, due to high tuition fees, unaffordable travel costs, and the time required to commute to these schools.

The project aims to construct a school that provides quality education to 250 students from underprivileged and low-income families. This school will address the educational needs of underprivileged children from over 800 households in Damot and the neighboring villages of Falkan and Bargan. The initiative strives to provide accessible, quality education to these communities, aiming to foster development and create opportunities in the area. Within the target area, there are two public sector high schools—one for boys and one for girls. Both schools are heavily constrained by limited space and the quality of education they can offer, with enrolment of 265 and 148 students respectively.

This proposal for the construction of a purpose-built campus, initially with the capacity to accommodate 250 students in kindergarten and primary grades under its flagship school build programme. This project will include: construction of a two-floor 4,900 ft 2 seismic compliant building, 8 classrooms each with the seating capacity of 30-35 students, 1 principal Office, 1 teachers room , 1 accountant / admin room to be built as a standalone structure close to the school’s main gate , 6 student toilets, and 2 staff toilets, Water arrangements for drinking and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) purposes, providing adequate, safe, and accessible water supplies for all users and furniture for 250 students and staff.

Beneficiaries: 286 people; 125 boys, 125 girls, 29 men and 7 women
