Distribution of hot and ready-to-eat meals for conflict-affected families on Gaza Strip

The Crisis.

Escalating displacement and damaged kitchens leave many families without the means to cook, store, or safely prepare food. Long queues for fuel and intermittent electricity make even simple meals difficult, pushing households to skip meals or rely on unsafe, improvised options.

Overcrowded shelters strain hygiene and food safety, while limited access to clean water and refrigeration heightens the risk of foodborne illness. Children, older adults, and people with chronic illness are particularly vulnerable to the nutritional and health impacts.

The Challenge.

Targeted meal distributions must concentrate resources at the highest-need sites while maintaining strict food safety, dignified access, and clear accountability.

  • Priority site selection: Use recent needs data and partner coordination to identify underserved shelters and neighborhoods, avoiding duplication and ensuring timely coverage where gaps are greatest.

  • Safe meal production: Operate vetted community kitchens or caterers with clean water, standardized menus, and temperature controls so meals remain balanced, halal, and safe to eat.

  • Orderly, dignified delivery: Implement verified lists, timed pickups, and accessible distribution points—with options for home delivery for the homebound—to reduce crowding and protection risks.

  • Monitoring and feedback: Track daily meal counts and quality, run spot checks and satisfaction surveys, and adjust menus, portions, and locations based on beneficiary input and market conditions.
