Restoring Home For Malasyian Families

The Crisis.

Floods, landslides, and storm surges have damaged homes across vulnerable districts, leaving families in cramped temporary shelters or doubled-up with relatives. Soaked structures, unsafe wiring, and contaminated wells make returning home risky, while rising prices for materials and labor stretch already thin household budgets.

Prolonged displacement erodes livelihoods and children’s schooling, and older adults or persons with disabilities face additional barriers to safe repairs. Without timely, affordable support, houses deteriorate further—mold spreads, walls weaken, and essential spaces like kitchens and bathrooms remain unusable.

The Challenge.

Recovery must move fast and focus on safety, affordability, and dignity—pairing quality repairs with inclusive targeting and practical support so families can return home and stay safe.

  • Rapid assessments & fair targeting: Use simple, door-to-door damage checks to prioritize the most-affected and vulnerable households, ensuring transparent criteria and community verification.

  • Safe repairs & build-back-better: Address structure, roofing, electrical safety, and water damage first; include mold remediation, ventilation, and flood-resilient details to reduce future risk.

  • Materials, cash, and local trades: Combine repair cash or vouchers with pre-vetted contractors and bulk-purchased materials, strengthening local supply chains and keeping costs predictable.

  • WASH, protection & accessibility: Restore safe water, sanitation, and drainage; add grab bars/ramps where needed; and provide guidance on safe re-entry, household hygiene, and maintenance.

Project Summary

In rural areas, the Orang Asli and indigenous groups in Sabah and Sarawak continue to experience economic hardship due to geographical isolation, lack of infrastructure, and limited access to healthcare and education. Sabah remains Malaysia’s poorest state, with 19.7% of its population living below the poverty line. Many communities, including the Bajau Laut (sea nomads), lack proper documentation, restricting their access to education, healthcare, and legal employment.

Many vulnerable communities continue to struggle with economic hardship, food insecurity, and limited access to healthcare. In particular, urban low-income families, indigenous groups, undocumented children, and rural populations in Sabah and Sarawak face severe challenges in meeting their basic needs. The Restoring Hope Ramadan 2025 project by Droplets of Mercy Malaysia seeks to address these pressing issues by providing immediate relief in the form of food aid and healthcare support, offering hope and dignity to those in need during the blessed month of Ramadan.

Project Outputs:

(i) A package containing essential food supplies for one month will be delivered to 200 families in need.

(ii) 700 individuals, including refugees, will receive nutritious and healthy meals to support their well-being.

(iii) A basic stationery set will be provided to 100 children, ensuring they have the necessary supplies for their education.

(iv) A basic oral hygiene kit will be distributed to 100 individuals, promotingbetter dental health and hygiene.
