Sheltering Dreams: Empowering Flood-Affected Families

The Crisis.

Severe flooding has pushed families into overcrowded schools, unfinished buildings, and improvised camps where privacy is scarce and protection risks rise. Soaked walls, damaged roofs, and unsafe wiring make returning home hazardous, while limited water and sanitation fuel respiratory and waterborne disease.

Displacement disrupts livelihoods and schooling, and rising prices for materials and labor put even basic repairs out of reach. Without timely, dignified shelter support, homes deteriorate, mold spreads, and families are forced into unsafe coping strategies that prolong recovery.

The Challenge.

Recovery must be fast, safe, and affordable—pairing weatherproof shelter solutions with essential services, fair targeting, and community stewardship so families can rebuild with dignity.

  • Rapid assessments & fair targeting: Conduct door-to-door damage checks using simple, transparent criteria to prioritize the most-affected and vulnerable households and prevent duplication.

  • Safe repairs & resilient upgrades: Deliver repair kits and technical guidance to fix structure, roofing, and electrics first, adding ventilation, mold remediation, and flood-resilient details to reduce future risk.

  • Materials, cash, and local labor: Combine cash or e-vouchers with vetted suppliers and community trades to stabilize prices, speed repairs, and keep resources circulating locally.

  • WASH, protection & follow-up: Restore safe water and sanitation, provide hygiene kits and fire safety basics, ensure accessible designs, and run post-repair checks with open feedback channels.

Project Summary

In August 2022, torrential monsoon rains triggered the most severe flooding in Pakistan’s recent history. On August 25, Pakistan declared a state of emergency because of the flooding. The government of Pakistan has estimated losses worth US$40 billion from the flooding.

Sindh is the worst-affected province with close to 70 percent of the total damages and losses. In Sindh, as many as 300,000 people are homeless, standing crops over 1.4 million acres have been destroyed, more than 386,039 houses were submerged and over 30, 000 villages got inundated.

The destruction in rural Sindh underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive, long-term solution. Establishing a model village through pooled resources and partnerships is the most effective approach.

Project Objectives:

• The whole model village will be constructed on 72,908.75 ft
• 35 homes to be constructed – each home equipped with solarization and individual handpumps
• Mosque that is over 2,400 ft
• Plot with 2 rooms for school and space for a medical dispensary.
• Children play area with swing sets

Beneficiaries: 35 Families; 238 individuals and 71 children
