Project Summary

This project helped reduce preventable child deaths in Sudan by restoring essential pediatric and neonatal services at two key referral hospitals. Through hospital rehabilitation, medical training, and improved emergency care capacity, we helped rebuild a healthcare system that can better protect children and families.

Project Objectives
This project:

  • Restored safe and functional pediatric inpatient services at Mohammed Alamin Hamid Children’s Hospital through essential rehabilitation work, including repairs to sanitation systems, electrical infrastructure, and hospital facilities.
  • Established and equipped a High Dependency Unit (HDU) at Port Sudan Children’s Hospital to provide urgent, lifesaving care for critically ill newborns and children, helping prevent dangerous delays in treatment.
  • Trained 30 pediatric nurses and healthcare technicians in neonatal emergency care, infection prevention, and the use of critical medical equipment.
  • Strengthened water, sanitation, and electrical systems at both hospitals to create safer environments for patients, families, and healthcare workers.

Immediate Impact
With your support, this project:

  • Provides pediatric and neonatal care to approximately 50,000 children annually including displaced families and surrounding communities.
  • Improves access to emergency care by reducing delays in neonatal referrals.
  • Strengthens children’s chances of recovery through improved stabilization and inpatient services.
  • Restores hospital systems so medical teams can provide safer, more reliable care.
  • Launched a fully operational High Dependency Unit in Port Sudan with trained staff and essential equipment.

Long-Term Impact

This project helped create lasting change by:

  • Strengthening emergency care networks in areas with urgent need.
  • Building sustainable models of pediatric and neonatal care that can support other conflict-affected communities.
  • Restoring trust in healthcare services and encouraging families to seek care earlier.
  • Contributing to Sudan’s long-term health recovery and global child health goals.
